These important regulations were drafted following an incident in Bridgewater where a young girl perished due to injuries sustained after falling into an unprotected trench. Jaclyn's Law\, as it is known\, is named in her memory. \n\n \n\nSeminar instructors will examine the main purpose of these regulations\, which is to establish procedures and methods to protect members of the general public from incurring similar injury. In particular\, the law and resulting regulation intends to:\n\n \n\n Protect the general public from hazards inherent in trenches by requiring\, among other things\, that all regulated trenches are attended\, covered\, barricaded\, or backfilled\; as necessary and\n Provide penalties for violations. \n\nIn addition to examining Jackie's law\, seminar instructors will review trench worker safety concerns. Along with protection of the public\, worker safety is of paramount importance. There are many hazards associated with excavation and trench work. Excavations are inherently hazardous due to unstable conditions. Workers can be seriously injured or killed if the sides of a trench collapse. Trenches do not have to be deep for accidents to occur. Serious injuries may occur in shallow as well as deeper trenches.\n\n \n\nFinally\, 520 CMR 6.00 establishes Department of Public Safety hoisting requirements. Instructors will examine current duties and responsibilities for hoisting licensees\, related Department policies and procedures and penalties for violations. \n\n \n\nThis seminar is designed to assist municipal authorities\, excavators and others with understanding their obligations under trench safety laws and associated regulations. Who should attend? \n\n \n\n Excavators\;\n Building inspectors\;\n Engineering inspectors\;\n Municipal and state permitting authorities
